I’m a website owner with not too much coding skill, so like others, I never put security on top of my priorities. Only until one of my online store was down by hacker, I realized how regular it was for malicious parties to compromise our websites.
Currently on the Internet, there are more than 1 billion websites running. The number is still rising since the world of technology is more and more developed. People have a made-easy tool to get their voice and presence online.
Except for websites which are coding-built from the scratch, the remaining 30% of online websites are built with 4 major platforms: WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and Magento. Leading the market, WordPress owns over 60% market share with the facilitation of global-user adoption which focuses on end users.
However, this explosion of user adoption brings a huge and serious challenge for website security because the website owners are mostly unskilled while they are in charged for deploying and administrating their sites.
The analysis of Sucuri.net showed the terrible results: in the infected list of 11,000 websites being analyzed, WordPress websites took over 75% and there were over 50% of them out-of-date.
When comparing this to other website platforms like Joomla and Drupal, the number is much worse with over 80% of those site are vulnerable with the expired system.
The worst thing is: my websites and even yours also have the chance of being in that list.
Now, what if I tell you this:
March 2015: Google reported that more than 17 million websites were hacked by malicious software and their user information was stolen.
March 2016: after just one year, the number rose to 50 million. All of them lost control, data, customer list, and business opportunities.
Currently, Google blacklists nearly 50,000 website for phishing and nearly 20,000 websites for malware every week.
The result of being hacked? I guess you don’t need me to answer a question like this.
You could lose all effort, money, time, and hard work to rank your website for SEO, just in a few minutes. If you can even restore it from the dust, it would take you months to put the website on SERPs position once again.
Once your website is in the blacklist of Google too long, 95% of your traffic would be killed and there is no turning back.
