Depending on how long you’ve been searching the internet for ways to make money online or live a digital lifestyle you will have come across a plethora of Sales Letters and Hyped-Up claims that you can make thousands of dollars with 5 clicks of a mouse.
Let me break it to you… That’s not entirely true…
And for your purposes, it is an Absolute Lie.
So, why did I say “Not entirely true”? The fact of the matter is that well established Internet Marketers with strong systems, that have built strong relationships with their lists can, and do make a lot of money by simply sending one short email.
However, as someone new to the world of Internet Marketing, this is NOT a reality. Like all good things it takes time, effort, trial and error, education, and perseverance. If you’re willing to stick it out and work as hard as you do for an employer that pays you peanuts, then a Digital Lifestyle is THE way to go!
- Your Business runs 24/7
- Your Business is Automated
- Your Business allows you to work anywhere the internet is available
First things first… How do you make money using the internet?
1. You have a Product or Service that You Own, Provide, and Created
2. You are an Affiliate, selling and promoting other people’s products or services
While the largest profit margins are available by owning and creating your own product it is best and easiest to start with Affiliate Marketing.
As an Affiliate you don’t have to worry about all the intricate parts of business like processing payments, returns, customer service, product fulfillment, sales funnels, and ad copy.
All you have to do is promote and direct traffic to the product and you get paid a percentage.
There are literally thousands of products in every niche imaginable!
You can get an idea of what’s out there by creating a free Clickbank Account. If you don’t know, Clickbank is one of the Internets largest marketplaces for finding Affiliate Products to Promote. Have a look around and you’ll see what I mean.
Starting your Internet Marketing Journey as an Affiliate is the best way to ‘get your feet wet.’ Often people forget that the traditional world of school systems, colleges, and regular business DO NOT and HAVE NOT taught You or anyone how to utilize and thrive in the Digital Economy. Simply because the Digital Economy is relatively new, and only in the past few years has truly shown its money making power!
Regardless if you already have your own product or service you want to offer online, or if you’re starting from scratch and want to begin making money online as an Affiliate you will Absolutely NEED these 5 Tools!
Tool #1: An Autoresponder
By definition an Autoresponder is “a computer program that automatically answers emails that are sent to it.”
So why is this important?
Having an autoresponder is what ultimately will AUTOMATE Your Business! Autoresponders are extremely powerful tools! They store and organize the names and email addresses of the people you’ve driven to your offer.
Once you’ve captured someone’s name and email you can begin to market to them. You do this by creating what is called a “Follow-Up Series.” This is a series of pre-written emails that give away great content and tips, as well as Affiliate Offers that will make you money.
You then pre-determine the length of time between each message. For example, lets say you want to email your subscribers ever 3 days. You simply tell the autoresponder that you want to space the emails out by 3 days and the autoresponder will automatically email the person. You can even select the time of day the email is sent!
I hope you see the POWER of this!
Lets assume you have 1,000 people on your email list. Think of trying to email 1,000 individual people every day! It’d be a full-time job! With an autoresponder, it’s all taken care of automatically. You do the work once (create the follow-up series) and then you’re done… forever!
The additional features and power of autoresponders goes on and on, but that is for another guide.
Now that You see the POWER Autoresponders I’m sure you’re wondering… “That’s great, but why do I need that?”
The REAL VALUE and IMPORTANCE of an Autoresponder is that you OWN YOUR LIST!
Depending on what statistic you read it cost 6-10 times MORE money & time to acquire and sell a Contact/ Lead the 1st product than it does to sell them a 2nd, 3rd, or 100th product.
Even if you’re an Affiliate Marketer, it is VITAL that you get the names of the people you’re referring to that product on Your list! After all, you did all the work finding them right? Once they’re on your list it is FREE, and nearly EFFORTLESS for you to market to them with different affiliate products they might be interested in! As long as they don’t unsubscribe you can market to them indefinitely!
Have you ever heard the term “The Money is in the List.”? This is true for ALL businesses. From restaurants to Your Affiliate Marketing business. You need people to walk through the door. You need people to sell and market to. People are the lifeblood of every business.
Having an autoresponder makes it easy and automated.
So where do you get your Auto responder?
Though this decision may seem easy, it is vitally important you choose wisely.
There are free autoresponder services like listwire, but I would highly suggest that you DO NOT go with a free service. They often limit the number of subscribers you can have. Options and functionality suffer. They have server reliability issues. Customer Service and tutorials are lackluster or nonexistent. MOST IMPORTANTLY… your emails sent from them have a greater chance of NEVER being read. Why?… SPAM!
We all hate SPAM, and in the internet world it is serious business and a big deal! Paid Autoresponder Services have entire departments of people and spend a lot of money ensuring that emails sent from their servers actually make it to their destination and not someones Junk folder. You get what you pay for, and this alone justifies the need for a paid service. In addition, they have fantastic customer service and tutorials on how to expand your campaigns as you become a more educated Internet Marketer.
So who to choose?
There are a number of great services
There are many others, but these are the most common, and honestly, the best.
Hands down however, there is one service that rivals above the rest. Sporting the best delivery rates (your emails actually making it to inboxes). Fantastic Customer Service and Tutorials.
What is it?… Aweber
Aweber offers your first month for only $1 and from then on it is $19.99/ month. As your list grows past 500 subscribers to 1,000 subscribers and more they incrementally increase the amount of your subscription. The concept is simple though… The more subscribers you have, the more money you’re making, thus the more valuable your list is to you.
What about the others?
MailChimp is a good autoresponder service. They do offer a free version for less than 500 subscribers, but honestly you’ll need more than 500 subscribers if you want to truly make money online; and looking mid-long term it’s not worth giving up the lower successful delivery rate.
InfusionSoft is brilliant, but is for well established marketers. Costs are in the hundreds per month and costs 4 figures for the initial set up.
GetResponse is also a good service, but is targeted toward small to mid sized lists. Not a bad choice, but again, delivery rates are key.
Personally, and all those I know, use Aweber. I’ve never had any issues with them. The service rocks! Customer service, and tutorials are all fantastic as well!
Tool #2: Web Hosting
Web Hosting is pretty straight forward:
Now you have your autoresponder, but you need a way to get people on your list.
You need a website.
How do you get a website? You have a Web Host.
A Web Host is the company that stores your website and all its data on its massive amount of servers that are reliably connected to the internet 100% of the time so whenever someone tries to go to your website it works.
There are two parts to getting set up with a Web Host
1. Subscribing to a determined length of time for hosting (e.g. 1yr, 3yr)
2. Choosing your domain name
First you have to choose a Web Host. There are a lot out there, and of course, I do have my preference.
Though it is tempting, I do not recommend that you get a prebuilt site from the web host. Firstly, it cost more. Second, your functionality and customization is dramatically hindered. In my opinion, (and the opinion of nearly the entire internet marketing world) you need to have a self-hosted WordPress Site, but I’ll get to that a little later.
Next, you need to get a domain. This is your URL, the thing people type in to go to your website. (e.g. http://danereis.com)
Both the Web Hosting and the Domain have separate fees.
Average Domain Names cost about $6.99-11.99/ yr. So pretty inexpensive. When you begin doing domain research however, you will find that some names are worth a lot and people try selling them for thousands. There is no reason you need to spend that kind of money. Just the basic is perfect.
Web Hosting fees vary per company you choose to go with. Introductory rates are around $3.95 per month, but can fluctuate up to $15.00/ month.
Here’s a list of a few Hosting Companies (there are dozens more):
Personally, I have used GoDaddy and BlueHost. Far and wide, I prefer Bluehost! Their interface is simple. They don’t try to up-sell you at every turn, and they have great customer service!
In addition, they are the #1 Preferred Host for WordPress! (as mentioned earlier, you’ll be wanting a Self-Hosted WordPress Site).
Benefits to using Bluehost…
- Unlimited Domain Hosting (you can have as many websites as you want)
- Unlimited Host Space (you can store as much data as you want)
- Unlimited File Transfer
- Unlimited Emails (these are custom emails e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org)
- FREE Domain Name
- FREE Instant Setup
- One Click WordPress Installation!
Tool #3: Your Website/ Blog
You’ve gotten your Autoresponder. You have your Web Hosting and your Domain Name. Now it’s time to make a website!
This isn’t nearly as daunting as it may sound. There was a time when you needed to know loads of html code to write your own website. Now, there are templates and plugins.
This couldn’t be easier!
Assuming you’ve decided to go with Bluehost you simply login and then go to you “cPanel.”
Near the top you will see “Website Builders”
Beneath that you will see an icon for “Wordpress” … click that.
Finally, select “Start a brand new install”
Since you only have one Domain Name it’s an obvious choice where you want to install WordPress.
** TIP ** Take note of your username & password. It will automatically create a password. You can change it now or later, but be sure to write it down/ remember it.
Now you have WordPress!
To login to the backend/ dashboard of your WordPress Website go to: YourCompleteURL/wp-admin
Enter your Username and Password… Voila!
Now You’re in!
That is the basic setup of your WordPress Site. Further tutorials for WordPress can be found at danereis.com and on youtube.
WordPress has revolutionized the website world! Originally, WordPress was strictly used as a blogging platform, but has since then grown to much more than that. Did I mention… it’s FREE!
What makes WordPress so brilliant is that it offers a standardization to a very complex world.
WordPress simplifies and standardizes nearly everything! You almost never need to write or know anything about code!
In fact, many Fortune 500 Companies have built their sites entirely on WordPress!
Every WordPress Dashboard looks the same and navigation through the Dashboard is identical for everyone. In addition, it has become such a standard that if you have any questions or need help implementing something there is a good chance youtube and forums can teach you how for free!
As if that isn’t enough… we haven’t even gotten to the best part!!
The 2 Best Parts of WordPress are Themes and Plug-ins!
What’s a Theme?
A theme provides the overall look and feel of your website.
There are two types of themes…
There are dozens of Free Themes to choose from, and many of them are excellent!
If you so desire you can search around the internet for Paid WordPress themes that may be more specific or customized to what you’re trying to create, however, my advice is to begin building your site with free themes. Once you get the feel of WordPress and you become comfortable with what you can do with it… only then consider purchasing a theme.
You will most assuredly go through many revisions of your website as you play with WordPress!
Themes are often extremely customizable! You can alter nearly every aspect of your site with ease, and for the questions you need answered, you will find solutions with ease using google and youtube because the WordPress community is so large!
** TIP ** To find more free themes, simply Google for ‘Free WordPress Themes’ or ‘Best Free WordPress Themes.’
What’s a Plug-In?
It is a separate piece of software written specifically for the WordPress Platform to do/ simplify an additional task.
The things plug-ins can do are nearly endless!
From handling merchant accounts and processing credit card transactions to pop-ups, google analytics, buttons, SEO, forms, membership portals, photo galleries, and more! Literally there are thousands! Just like the saying, “There’s an app for that.” If you have a need, I’m sure there’s a Plug-in for it as well! To top it off, because of the massive community of WordPress users all the plug-ins have ratings and tutorials!
Now you can see the versatility of WordPress! The learning curve isn’t too steep, and taking a bit of time learning the ins and outs of WordPress will dramatically increase your effectiveness as an Internet Marketer!
Tool #4: A Landing Page
Ok, so what the heck is a Landing Page?
** TIP ** They are also known as a “Lead Capture Page” or a “Squeeze Page.”
Your Landing Page is a dedicated page where you attempt to collect a person’s name and email address for your Aweber email list.
All Landing Pages have a “Web Form.” In fact, because you’re reading this guide, you filled out a “Web Form” to get the download link.
Where do you get/ create a Web Form?
1. Aweber has a Web Form Generator that allows you to customize and insert your Web Form into your website.
2. Yup, there are Plug-Ins for web forms as well
There is a slight difference to Landing Pages and a simple Web Form on the side of a website…
Landing Pages are a dedicated page with a specific purpose: Get the person to enter their name and email. Sometimes they include a video explaining what benefits you will receive for entering your information. Sometimes it is simply text and pictures that list the benefits you’ll receive. Benefits can include things like a free Bootcamp Video Series, or a free eBook.
Landing Pages should always be designed for a specific market. For instance, both old and young people are interested in using the internet to make money. However, the 20 year old male is probably motivated more by fast cars, planes, and luxuries of life than say the 55 year old male who is trying to get debt free and wants to retire on a beach. They both want the same product, but they need to be marketed to differently.
The great part is that you can create as many landing pages as you want, and you can direct all the names and emails to the same follow-up series email list in your autoresponder.
It is VITAL that you ALWAYS filter your leads through a Landing Page when promoting Affiliate Products. It’s a waste of your time and money to send people directly to the site/ product you’re promoting. If you do, you may make a sale, you may not, but that lead is gone forever. If you have them on your list you may not make a sale initially, but through your follow-up series and by building a trusting relationship through emails you’ll make additional sales and you just may gain a loyal customer for life!
A Quick Recap how these tools all work together…
You use your self-hosted WordPress website to create a Landing Page that captures a persons name and email through a web form you’ve created. That person is then added to your Aweber Autoresponder email list where you’ve created a follow-up series that emails them on auto-pilot with emails that contain a mixture of quality content and product offers.
Tool #5: Your Plan
“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”
All the best tools in the World will do you no good if you don’t know what direction you want to go. Think about it, even the most simple task of going to the grocery store has a plan. You don’t get into your car and aimlessly drive around hoping you’ll stumble across a grocery store do you? You know exactly where you want to go before you start, and then you follow the plan and get what you need.
I don’t want to overwhelm you with options, but here are a few of the directions you can go…
- Video Blogging
- Affiliate Marketing
- Article Marketing
- Banner Ads
- PPC/ CPA
- Facebook Ads & Pages
- Solo Ads
Ultimately you will utilize a combination of a few of those methods. The KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS is that you concentrate on ONE AT A TIME. When you’ve gotten the hang of it and you feel comfortable, then you move onto the next form of marketing.
The #1 Problem that happens (and in fact happened to me) is that you enter this Internet World… you get really excited and want to do as much as possible and everything possible. You spend too much time educating yourself instead of taking action by applying what you learn as you learn, and when you take action you unintentionally spread yourself too thin trying to do everything all at once.
The #2 Problem is ‘Analysis Paralysis.’ The forever obsession of endless education of getting ready to get ready. There is never, and will never be the perfect time. You simply must take action, and as you learn and your skills increase, you continue to innovate your website and your methods.
So what now?
You have the essential tools to succeed online. Now you need a plan, and you need the education to get that plan into profitable action.
Where do you get a top notch Internet Education?
Fact of the matter is that if you’re new to internet marketing you need an education. Yes, you can scrounge Google for methods and techniques, but there are programs and websites that will help speed up your journey and education process.
There are two places I can honestly recommend as I use both daily
1. The Six Figure Mentors (SFM)
SFM is honestly one of the BEST training courses and memberships I’ve ever come across. They have dozens of videos, tutorials, and articles walking you step by step through the different methods of internet marketing. From live webinars to a helpful community of people you can learn how to become everything, from a WordPress Master to a Master Marketer with their training. In addition to their training they also have a Top-Tier Affiliate program attached that allows you to make money while learning how to become a Master Marketer!
2. The Directory of Ezines (DOE)
The DOE is owned by Charlie Page who is one of the Internets most respected marketers. What is an Ezine? An Ezine is an Electronic Magazine that people subscribe to and is emailed to them on a regular basis. Just like magazines, Ezines are about specific niches and subject matter. For example, the difference between a Cosmopolitan and Economist magazine. What is the DOE? Charlie and his team have compiled all the best Ezines from around the World so you don’t have to do the research of finding high quality Ezines to market to. They’ve done all the hard work (and trust me, it is very hard and tedious to find quality ezines on your own)! The DOE specializes is Ezine, Article, and Solo Ad marketing. In addition, the DOE provides training for each of those marketing types.
With that, this guide has come to an end. I hope this has opened your eyes and your mind to the World of Internet Marketing, and that it is possible and truly is the way of the future. We are in the middle of a Digital Gold Rush right now! It’s time to think outside the box and join those of us making money online!
Good Luck! I’ll see you on the other side.
